Happy Independence Day: Our Top 10 records from India

Happy Independence Day: Our Top 10 records from India
MydeaMediaGUINNESS WORLD RECORDS NEWS
August 15 marks an annual holiday in India to celebrating the country's independence.
India became a sovereign nation at the stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947, after spending nearly two centuries under the rule of the British.
To mark the anniversary, here are ten amazing world records currently held by the nation.
Largest democracy
India is known as the "world's largest democracy" and its current Prime Minister (the country's 13th) is Dr. Manmohan Singh, who has held the position since 22 May 2004; a member of the ruling Congress Party, he is also the first Sikh to reach the post, and at 79, one of the oldest people today to head a government. With an estimated population of 1.2 billion - the world's second largest after China - the electorate alone was estimated at 714 million for the 2009 national election - more than the combined electorates of the USA and EU.
Most centuries scored in international cricket
When he scored 114 against Bangladesh in an ODI on 16 March 2012, the "Little Master" Sachin Tendulkar (India) became the first player to score 100 international centuries.
Largest ruby
The largest Ruby weighs 21,955 g (48 lbs 6.43 oz) and measures 310 x 165 x 140 mm (12.20 x 6.49 x 5.51 in) and is owned by Rajiv Golcha. The ruby has been named "The King Ruby" and is held in the Prestige Gems & Jewels showroom in India.
Largest roti / chapati
The largest chapati weighed 63.99 kg (141 lb 1 oz) and was made by the Shree Jalarm Mandir Jirnodhar Samitee organisation at the Jalaram Temple, Jamnagar, on 15 January 2005.
Highest box office film gross for a Bollywood film
3 Idiots (2009), starring R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Aamir Khan, is the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time taking more than 202,57,00,000 INR ($44.9 million; £29.9 million) to date, seeing off competition from the 2010 films Dabangg, Golmaal 3 and Raajneeti by a considerable margin.
Largest annual film output
India is the world's most prolific film-making nation, with approximately 800 to 1,000 feature films being produced each year by the 'Bollywood' film industry based in Mumbai. This is roughly double the number of films produced by Hollywood each year. In 2009, a total of 1,288 films were produced in India, in 24 different languages. By contrast, Hollywood produced 606 feature films during 2008 - an all-time record for the American film industry.
Most expensive wedding
The wedding of Vanisha Mittal, daughter of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, to investment banker Amit Bhatia was the most expensive wedding in the world. The six-day event, held in Versailles in 2004, included a re-enactment of the happy couple's courtship and an engagement ceremony at the Palace of Versailles - the only private function ever to have been held in the palace. Guests at the wedding reception were entertained by a number of world famous performers, including Shah Rukh Khan and Kylie Minogue. And the bill picked up by the bride's father? A mere $55 million (then over £28 million).

The Record for the Most Babies Born to One Woman is 69

The Record for the Most Babies Born to One Woman is 69

Dr. Hari Nair      MydeaMedia

Today I found out that the record for most babies born to one woman is 69.  Yes, you read that correctly 69!
Who was this amazing woman with apparently a womb of steel and a vagina her husband just couldn’t say no too?  We don’t really know. (anti-climactic I know)  Her husband is the one whose name has lived on because of her crazy baby making skills. (Feminists of the world unite!)  She was the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev, a peasant from Shuya, Russia who lived from 1707-1782.   We can only speculate how many fire safety ordinances he violated by housing all his progeny in his little peasant sized hovel.  Presumably, at some point they also had to choose to feed on the weak ones in order to provide food for the strong.
How did she manage this feat given most women only have about 30-ish years of baby making ability?  She gave birth to sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets; so basically a veritable baby making factory who scoffs at “one at a timing” it.  Amazingly, 67 of her children survived infancy, which was a remarkable rate for the day.  No word on whether either of her breasts could say the same.
Now, let’s just take a step back here.  She was the “first wife” of Feodor Vassilyev.  Seeming to imply he married again. (Polygamy was not generally practiced at that time in Russia; so we can assume he was only married to one lady at a time.)  So this guy goes out; shuns wearing tighty whities (presumably); gets married; invests all his money in a baby naming book; then apparently takes every second his wife isn’t pregnant as a personal affront to his manhood; then she presumably kills herself (I mean really, wouldn’t you?) and he then somehow manages to swindle another woman into wanting to be his wife and take on raising his clan?  Can you imagine remembering all 67 of their names?  Especially considering that woman would also need to deal with the fact that many of them came in identical sets.  I don’t know about you, but my parents have to go through every one of my siblings names before they can correctly say mine when they want to get my attention.  That must have taken forever in that family.
Then, of course, after old Feodor Vassilyev swindles her into becoming his second wife, he presumably decided to use her vagina as a clown car too. *shudders*
The really amazing thing of it is that with the 67 surviving kids, if each of them had 2 kids (a low number for back then, but we’ll be conservative here) and each of their kids had 2 kids and so on, and we assume about 25-ish years between generations.  Then this couple currently has around 70,000 descendants!

It is a place at once thought of for its destitution, crime, and poverty – where a bitter conflict has claimed the lives of more than 35,000 Mexicans.
Photographer David Rochkind captures Mexico’s seedy drug trade in a brutally humanistic light in a series of images collected in his book, ‘Heavy Hand, Sunken Spirit.’
His photographs capture a rugged landscape thrown into a vicious war on the trade, and the people who have been affected by or succumbed to the overwhelming influence of the drug trade.
Mr Rochkind, who graduated from the University of Michigan and is currently based out of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, traveled to Mexico beginning in 2007 to photograph the series, shooting cartel members, addicts, inmates, and communities torn apart by the drug war.
These images are only a small sampling of the collection or reportage appearing in his book.

A bride returned from her dream honeymoon to find her father waiting at the airport - to tell her that her new husband had stolen £18,000 from the family business.
Charlie Astrand, 25, said her 'world came crashing down' when she was told the man she married was a thief and a fraudster.
Primary school teacher Charlie thought her new life was perfect - she had just married charming Huw Jones, 31, a sales executive at her father's car dealership.

Perfect wedding: Charlie Astrand, 25, with her new husband Huw Jones, 31, on their wedding day. Charlie's father Graham is pictured left, and her mother Alison is right. But when she returned from honeymoon, the primary school teacher's dream turned into a nightmare
Her parents paid for the £20,000 white wedding and contributed towards their two-week luxury honeymoon on the Caribbean island of Aruba.
But a court heard how the newlyweds were away only two days when Charlie's father Graham discovered his new son-in-law had fiddled the books.
He went to the police but was advised to let the couple finish their honeymoon before confronting Jones back in Britain.

Graham, 53, waited at the airport's arrivals lounge armed with the proof that Jones had forged signatures to steal from the business and customers.
The honeymoon drama was revealed in court when Jones admitted a total of 24 charges of fraud, forgery and theft.
His family have now pledged to pay back £18,000 after he pleaded guilty to the offences.

Charlie said: 'It was the worst moment of my life - I had just had the most blissful honeymoon with the man I loved.
'But then everything was shattered. My world came crashing in on me. I saw my dad waiting to pick me up as planned - he gave me the biggest hug I've ever had.
'But Huw's family were there too and they just sort of whisked him away without a word.
'I asked my dad what was wrong and he just said: "Come to the car".'
Charlie was shown the paperwork that proved her new husband had defrauded the family firm of more than £18,000.
She said: 'The next thing I was on my way home with my dad after being told Huw had been stealing from us. I had a panic attack in the car - I couldn't take in what was happening.
'In the four years I had known him there was not the slightest clue anything was wrong.
'We lived together for two years and he was loving, caring and romantic, always spoiling me with presents and treats.

'My family thought the world of him - he was hard-working and committed to building a happy home and future for us.'
Policeman's son Jones yesterday avoided a jail sentence after pleading guilty to fraud, forgery and theft.
Charlie's parents Graham and Alison were at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court in South Wales, to hear how £18,478 'fell through the gaps' of the company accounting system.
Prosecutor Heath Edwards said: 'Jones had forged signatures, manipulated the accounts and sweetened deals.
'He did it to impress his fiancee and her family - and to up his sales figures for commission.
'Jones forged documents and upped the amount of money in loan applications, unbeknown to customers.
'He misused a customer's credit card and drove another customer to the bank to get £500 cash for a deposit which he stole.'
Mr Edwards said Jones kept the fraud secret from his fiancee during their two-year engagement leading up to their marriage in 2010 - but the con came unravelled while he was on honeymoon.
Mr Edwards said: 'Mr Astrand was waiting at the airport to confront his new son-in-law when he stepped off the plane.

'Jones had manipulated the accounts system, effectively robbing Peter to pay Paul. He repeatedly used one customer's money to settle another customer's account.
'He deliberately manipulated the system in order to sell more cars.'
The court heard Jones offered free services and discounts he was not entitled to give in order to placate suspicious customers.
Laurence Jones, defending, said: 'Jones had been taking on responsibilities he could not cope with in an overwhelming desire to impress his future father-in-law.
'The nub of his offending is being reckless in his role as salesman offering deals which were not sustainable.
'He has learned a very long, hard salutary lesson and is remorseful for his actions.'
Judge Dan Williams jailed Jones for nine months but suspended the sentence for 18 months.
He was ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work and told to complete a thinking skills programme.
Judge Williams told him: 'I have given you a chance even though I am not convinced you deserve it. Please don't blow it.'

Graham, who runs a car dealership in Aberdare, South Wales, was in court to see the case - and called Charlie at school to tell her Jones had avoided a jail sentence.
After the case, University graduate Charlie said: 'I was in tears again when I found out he was not going to jail.
'I expected him to get prison - that would have been the right sentence for what he did to me and my family. I have bumped into him in our town since we came back from honeymoon. But I have moved on.
'I am not bitter or angry about what happened - but I was terribly hurt and it's taken me two years to get over it.'
Jones also moved on in life - he remarried last month after becoming a father six months ago.
Charlie said: 'He has lived a happy life for the past two-and-a-half years - he's met someone new, got married and even has a child.

'He still hasn't paid a price for everything he did. Every day we have to deal with it.
'We really thought he would go to prison and that would be the end of it.
'But I feel like he's had no punishment for the pain and hurt he's caused me and my family.'
Charlie has started a new relationship with accountant Chris Henneman.
She said: 'I have a very happy life with Chris, and it's because of him I am where I am today - he's been my rock.'
Charlie's father Graham today hit out at the 'lenient' sentence given to his former son-in-law and employee.
He said: 'I wanted justice for Charlie and for our customers but he was let off with a suspended sentence.
'I believe that is a disgrace he deserved to spend time behind bars for what he had done. But the important thing is four us not to let this change us as a family. We are better than that.'
